How to Use this Directory
NIRE is presenting this Directory of RE Providers as a public service. However, NIRE is not
in a position to formally recommend or endorse any specific individual listed here. Nor can
NIRE accept responsibility for the actions of any individual therapist or educator. The
choice of a specific RE Therapist or RE Program Educator is a highly personal one for which
each individual must assume full responsibility.
On the other hand, we do hope that this Directory of RE Providers will prove to be a useful
resource in helping you identify an RE Therapist or RE Program Educator who can provide
quality services in a manner consistent with the RE method. Here are a few hints in how to
approach selecting an RE Provider.
Note the services offered by those listed in this directory
|
RE Couples Workshops and Programs: These are educational in nature and are offered in
a variety of formats, including 1- and 2-day RE skills-training workshops and weekly
programs or groups that may run seven or more sessions for two hours each. There will
be one or more Authorized or Certified RE Program Educators leading the program, and
a number of couples attending. The emphasis is on private practice time, and there is
no expectation around sharing personal issues with the group. RE workshops and
programs are educational in nature, and are not therapy sessions.
Private Counseling Utilizing the RE Method: RE Therapy has always been conceived of
as an educational, skills-training approach to helping couples and families enhance
their relationships and solve problems on their own. Private counseling utilizing the
RE method provides couples and families with an opportunity to learn in a private
setting, and to receive more in-depth attention from a mental health professional
that can be tailored to your unique needs.
Small Group Counseling Utilizing the RE Method: Small group counseling combines
elements of counseling with an educational group. There likely would be some personal
sharing, which provides the added benefit of couples being able to learn from one
another.

When to seek a counselor
|
Most couples and families would benefit from the educational focus of RE workshops
and programs. However, these are not intended as substitutes for counseling or
therapy - though they can serve as excellent preparation.
Sometimes people need more than an educational workshop or program can provide.
Reasons might include: severe depression or anxiety, substance abuse, emotional or
physical abuse, major conflicts that never get resolved, or an affair. Other times,
people just feel stuck and recognize they need help to make change happen.
Good counselors trained in the RE method can help you in a variety of ways.
-
First and foremost, by teaching you the RE skills, they will help create a
safe place where you can both express yourself freely and hear your partner
with genuine openness.
-
In addition, they will coach you through your dialogues in a manner that
takes you deeper and helps you resolve your issues in a more meaningful way.
-
They will also coach you through the often challenging change process and
help you increase the odds of long-term success.
-
Finally, they will help you integrate the skills in a manner that increases
the odds that you will continue to use and benefit from the use of the RE
skills once your counseling has been completed.

Choosing the right counselor for you
|
When choosing a counselor or therapist, it is very important to select someone with
whom you feel comfortable and in whom you can place your trust.
Be clear with that individual what your needs are, and inquire if that person is
experienced in the area(s) of importance to you. Also inquire about fees and billing.
If your experience with your counselor or therapist is not satisfying and is not
meeting your needs, discuss this with him or her. Sometimes the fit just isn't right,
for any number of reasons. Other times the issue(s) can be addressed successfully and
the process is deepened and enriched.
Good luck!
